ARTTOY : PIECES of COOLRAIN, an exhibition by art-toy artist Coolrain (Lee Chan-woo), runs through November 22 at ARTPIEZ Gallery in Seoul’s Mapo district. It brings together about 300 finished works, sketches, prototypes and components. Admission is free.
Finished works and process
Art toys are sculptural figures shaped by an artist’s visual language. Coolrain has been making them since 2004.
The exhibition pairs roughly 300 finished works with sketches, prototypes, components and notes, showing decisions about proportion, posture and fabrication that a finished figure can hide. The image at the top of this article is a separate official title graphic.
Basketball and street culture
The organizer cites basketball, b-boying, hip-hop and street fashion among the artist’s influences.
The official poster, published through Newswire, shows a character in a basketball jersey and oversized shoes, surrounded by rectangles cropping fragments of faces and clothing. The outsized shoes and folds of the jersey, set against altered body proportions, give the character its personality.
