Song of Roots, on Mullae metal craft, enters its final weekend

Song of Roots, an exhibition pairing metalworking shops in Seoul’s Mullae-dong with artists, closes October 11. Four teams show work built on local metal fabrication skills, with free admission on the final weekend, October 10–11.

Four teams

Each team pairs a Mullae metalworking business with an artist. Starting points include silicone-molded ice trays, a heart keyring, an unfinished mortar, a prototype motor and machining by-products.

The exhibition draws its materials from a neighborhood where metal shops and creative studios operate side by side.

Repeated shapes

A photograph of Bonghwa Industry’s collaboration with Kim Seong-jin shows three metal plates standing against a wall, one carrying repeated small shapes and another cut with a large rectangular opening.

Elsewhere, small recesses in a plate, circular components around a light and gear diagrams on a wall form other patterns. Cutting recesses, shaping circles and joining parts give the same metal a different character in each work.
