NOW

The large fixed umbrellas you see beside Seoul crosswalks in summer are heat-mitigation infrastructure, not café furniture. They are placed where pedestrians have to stand in direct sun while waiting for the signal.

WHY AT CROSSWALKS?

Seoul’s guidelines prioritize crossings with long waits and heavy foot traffic. The design targets a tiny but unavoidable pause in a pedestrian journey.

PLACEMENT IS PART OF THE DESIGN

A shade structure must not block drivers’ sightlines or obstruct pedestrians. Seoul continues to expand shade and canopy facilities as part of its 2026 heat-response program.
