Leave one small gap in the weekend

Time left unassigned still has a use.

One Saturday stop becomes two. You find a café nearby and work out how long it takes to reach the next place. A well-planned day is reassuring. But once every slot is filled, it is hard to stay longer somewhere, even when there is a reason to.

In a small gallery, a painting catches your eye. You have already walked the room, but you want to go back to the picture by the entrance. What looked like background now seems central. What that moment calls for is not a faster way to understand the work, but a few minutes to go back.

A gap is not a promise to do nothing. It gives priority to an interest that arises on the spot. You let a bus go and walk a little further down a lane, or reopen a book at the page you just closed. The time does not need to end in a remarkable discovery.

Cross one place off this weekend’s list. There will be less to recount at home. One scene, though, will stay a little longer.
