It’s ‘웬일이야?’, not ‘왠일이야?’

Even native Korean speakers often mix up 웬 and 왠 in texts and chats. Use 웬 when it means ‘what kind of / how come,’ while 왠지 is the contracted form of 왜인지, meaning ‘for some reason.’ So ‘웬일이야?’ is the correct spelling.

❌ COMMON MIX-UPS

You may see ‘왠일이야?’, ‘왠만하면’, or ‘웬지 이상해.’ in casual messages.

✅ WRITE THEM THIS WAY

The standard forms are ‘웬일이야?’, ‘웬만하면’, and ‘왠지 이상해.’ 왠지 is special because it comes from 왜인지.

WHY THE TWO FORMS?

웬 is a determiner meaning roughly ‘what kind of’ or ‘what happened.’ 왠지 is an adverb contracted from 왜인지 — literally, ‘for what reason.’

A CHAT EXAMPLE

A: 네가 먼저 연락하다니, 웬일이야? — ‘You texted first? What’s the occasion?’ B: 그냥 왠지 네 생각이 났어. — ‘I just thought of you for some reason.’

ONE MORE SPACING TRAP

웬일 is a single dictionary word, so it is written together. In phrases such as ‘웬 말이야,’ 웬 simply modifies the following noun, so the words are spaced.
