You do not need to have lived through an era to feel at home in its music. Meet Eoneusae, a song from Jang Pil-soon’s 1989 solo debut. Bring your own memories; no knowledge of Korean music is required.
MEET THE SINGER · JANG PIL-SOON
Jang Pil-soon is a Korean singer-songwriter with roots in folk music. She released her first solo album in 1989, with Eoneusae becoming an early signature song. For a first listen, notice the breath and gentle grain of her voice: the feeling does not need to be shouted to reach you.
THE LYRICIST · KIM HYUN-CHUL
A lyricist writes the words and shapes a song’s story. Kim Hyun-chul wrote the lyrics here. The narrator notices that the passing years have changed not just life around them, but the way they feel.
THE COMPOSER · ALSO KIM HYUN-CHUL
Kim wrote the melody too. A singer, composer and producer, he also released his own debut album in 1989. The singer and songwriter are not always the same person in Korean music; on this track, Jang supplies the voice and Kim is credited with both words and music.
A SMALL KOREAN LESSON · EONEUSAE
The title, 어느새 (Eoneusae), means something like ‘before I knew it’ or ‘without my noticing.’ It captures the surprise of realizing that a change has already happened. Before I Knew It is our explanation of the title, not a claim about an official English release title.
WHAT IT CAN MEAN · OUR READING
Time softens the narrator’s grief, but it also seems to dim longing and emotional intensity. There is relief in no longer hurting, and a quieter sadness in feeling less than before. We hear it less as a promise that time heals everything than as a moment of recognizing a changed self.
A WAY INTO THE SONG
Listen once without trying to understand every word. Then notice how the returning word eoneusae feels against the melody. This is NowHitz’s interpretation of the lyrics, not a documented statement of the songwriter’s intentions. The live video and original-album link let you explore two different performances of the same song.
