Korea joins the Kyoto Vision push to use AI for faster scientific discovery

Science and technology ministers from major countries, including South Korea, discussed the Kyoto Vision for a Golden Age of Science in Kyoto, Japan, on October 4. The document calls for careful use of AI in research, less administrative burden on researchers and coordinated changes to funding and talent systems.

AI as research infrastructure

The Kyoto Vision calls for thoughtful integration of AI or “Super Intelligence” into scientific workflows, from reasoning across large bodies of knowledge to modeling physical and biological systems and closed-loop discovery. It also calls for broader access to scientific data, computing and experimental facilities.

Funding and early-career talent

The statement encourages a mix of long-duration awards, rapid grants, prizes and challenge programs, along with new research-institution models. It supports early investment in promising researchers and more joint doctoral programs, fellowships and collaborative research.

Korea’s science ministry said it will remain engaged in the related international cooperation.
