Jeong Hyeon-jong

Born in Seoul in 1939, Jeong studied philosophy at Yonsei University and made his literary debut through Hyundae Munhak in 1965. His collections include The Dream of Things, So Little Time to Love and Whisper of Splendor.

A place in Korean culture

His poetry explores life, perception and human connection. “The Visitor” treats welcoming someone as receiving a whole life and a vulnerable heart, offering a way to think about hospitality beyond a simple greeting.

What else to know

Everyday language can open an unexpected view of a familiar relationship. Reading “The Visitor” may leave us not just with an idea about poetry, but with a little more patience for the next person we meet.

The story behind it

For World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21, NowHitz reads the poem alongside the importance of respecting a person’s whole life rather than measuring them by memory alone. This is our editorial connection, not a claim that the poem was written about dementia.
