After Jemulpo Port opened in 1883, foreign settlements, banks, trading houses and warehouses reshaped this district. The streets also carry traces of colonial exploitation. Today, modern-era architecture, museums, Incheon Art Platform and Jayu Park fit into one walkable old-town route.

The opening of Jemulpo Port in 1883 redirected the city
Foreign trading firms, banks, warehouses and settlement districts followed the port opening, while rail and modern postal systems connected Incheon to a rapidly changing Korea. The same urban fabric also records Japanese imperial economic penetration and colonial rule, so the area is best read with both histories in view.
Heritage and everyday cultural life overlap within a few blocks
The appeal is not only preserved architecture. Incheon Art Platform reuses warehouse buildings for exhibitions and public programs; museums, Jayu Park and the old downtown’s cafés and markets are easy to connect on foot. Recent local-linked exhibitions keep the district functioning as a cultural quarter rather than a frozen heritage zone.
