Daepyeong-dong sits on Busan Harbor, where ship repair has shaped daily life for more than a century. The name Kangkangee comes from the clang of hammers stripping rust and old paint from hulls. Today, active repair yards, public art and neighborhood culture occupy the same few streets.

Before the murals, ‘kangkang’ was the sound of work
The name comes from the hammering used to remove rust, shells and old paint from ship hulls. Many of the workers who spent years doing this demanding work were women from Daepyeong-dong. Busan Tourism Archive records their labor, including the hearing damage and tinnitus that could come with the job, as a central part of the neighborhood’s history.
It is an arts village, but the working harbor comes first
Boats still enter the waterfront and repair yards remain active. Murals, public artworks, the culture center and the village museum sit between real workshops. The place makes more sense if you come to read Busan’s shipbuilding history rather than treating it as a mural backdrop.

Kangkangee Information Center and Village Museum
Start with the ship-repair history, then the tools, boats and workshops outside become much easier to understand. Guided walks and sea tours depend on the day’s schedule, so check before you go.
Yangdabang
An old-style local coffee shop at 49 Daepyeong-ro. Visit Busan lists hours as 07:30–18:00 Monday–Saturday and 09:00–18:00 Sunday. It feels closer to the neighborhood’s everyday rhythm than a newly built ocean-view café.

Namhang Market
If you want to keep following local Yeongdo life after the village, continue to Namhang Market. Visit Busan describes it as a traditional market built by postwar refugees, known for seafood and inexpensive local food; listed hours are 09:00–21:00, closed on the first and third Sundays.
Around 10:00–16:00
The waterfront, repair yards, public art and lane structure are all easy to see. Check same-day hours separately if you want the information center, museum or a tour.

Morning
You can feel the harbor starting its workday, but some visitor facilities and nearby businesses may not be open yet.
Before sunset
The light across the old port softens, but check closing times first if you plan to visit the museum, café or market.
QUICK WALK
Information center → waterfront → public art and shipyard lanes
RECOMMENDED
Add the village museum and a stop at Yangdabang
WITH FOOD
Continue to Namhang Market for a fuller slice of everyday Yeongdo
Before you visit
Ship-repair yards and homes are still in active use. Keep workshop entrances, vehicles and equipment routes clear. Guided walks, vessel experiences and sea tours are not guaranteed every day. Check the information center for the current schedule and booking rules. Ask before taking close-up photos of residents, workers or the inside of active yards.
Station access
Nampo Station · Busan Metro Line 1
Getting there from Nampo Station
Visit Busan directs visitors from Nampo Station Exit 6 to bus 6 or 113, followed by roughly a seven-minute walk from the Kangkangee Arts Village or Yeongdo Police Station area. This remains a working ship-repair neighborhood, so keep workshop entrances and equipment routes clear. The village, museum, information center, Yangdabang and sea-tour schedules are separate and should be checked individually.
