Why NOW picked itGood for first-timers wary of opera: start with a free masterclass (Oct. 21) or talk (Oct. 24), then a 30,000-won seat. It is far from downtown, so it won't fit into a city-centre day.
Curious about opera but put off by the ticket price? This week Gangdong Arts Center lowers the bar: the Oct. 21 masterclass and the Oct. 24 'Magic Flute' preview talk are free, and the Verdi gala starts at 30,000 won.
An opera week in four days
The 2026 Seoul Opera Festival runs Oct. 21–24 in the Main Hall 'Hangang' and Small Theater 'Dream' at Gangdong Arts Center. The Seoul city culture event aims to make opera easier to approach and to support young musicians.
A free talk, a gala concert and a family opera follow one after another.
Two seats that cost nothing
On Wed., Oct. 21 at 2 p.m., bass Yeon Kwang-cheol gives a free masterclass in the Small Theater. On Sat., Oct. 24 at 4:30 p.m., 'Opera 100% Enjoyment' previews The Magic Flute with commentary by Seo Sang-hwa in the Main Hall, also free.
This is per the Seoul Culture Portal schedule; how to sign up for the free sessions is not stated on the pages we found.
