Why the Silla horse-rider figure is hollow inside

Silla’s horse-and-rider shaped pottery looks like a small sculpture, but its body is hollow. Liquid poured into a funnel at the back of the horse flows out through a spout at its chest.

Two riders, two outfits

The pair was excavated from Geumnyeongchong Tomb in Gyeongju. The National Museum of Korea describes one rider as a master and the other as a servant.

Differences in scale, clothing and horse equipment offer clues to social rank and material culture in Silla.

A hollow body

A funnel at the rear leads into the hollow body, and a long spout projects from the chest. Tilting the vessel lets liquid run out.

A National Museum of Korea and EBS video uses the actual object and X-ray imagery to explain the design.
