Samsung outlines KRW 360tn Yongin chip cluster; first fab targets 2029

Samsung Electronics has presented the future plan for the Yongin advanced-system-semiconductor national industrial complex. The project involves about KRW 360 trillion of investment, more than 70 supplier and fabless firms, and a first fab targeted for October 2029.

The national industrial complex is moving into construction

LH completed contractor selection for the first construction section on September 30, two months earlier than originally planned. Samsung is targeting the first fab’s construction start in 2028 and operation in October 2029.

Power and water are as important as fabs

Three LNG generation units are planned, while treated wastewater from Hwaseong, Osan and Suwon is to be purified and reused as industrial water. Infrastructure delivery will be a major factor in whether the accelerated semiconductor schedule holds. The linked KTV video is an official report from the industrial-complex approval stage and is provided as background for today’s updated schedule.
