44 seconds of Korea travel memories in black and white

Dan Lester’s 44-second animation draws fish, street snacks, birds and faces from a trip to Seoul, Busan and Gyeongju in black lines, then turns them into new patterns.

Inside a square frame, forms turn and repeat as one scene gives way to the next. Skewers, bottles and fish bones are hidden in the food patterns. The changing rhythm of the lines matters as much as any single image.

Behind the Short

Lester says the work draws on sights, food and art he encountered in Seoul, Busan and Gyeongju. He credits himself with animation, design and sound design, and Yaeji with music. It is a traveler’s personal reworking of memory.
