WGBI inclusion ends in November; year-end bond demand is next

Korea’s inclusion in the World Government Bond Index is set to finish in November. Foreign investors have bought roughly KRW 42 trillion of government bonds since April, putting the post-inclusion demand gap in focus.

Foreign inflows have been substantial

Since phased inclusion began in April, foreign net purchases of Korean government bonds have reached about KRW 42 trillion. WGBI-tracking money has supported demand, especially further out the curve, and the process is scheduled to conclude in November.

The market is shifting to the post-inclusion question

The government cut October government-bond issuance by KRW 5 trillion from its earlier plan. If passive foreign demand slows after November, domestic institutional demand and any further issuance reductions will matter more for year-end volatility.
