Dongpirang’s mural lanes above Tongyeong’s Ganguan harbor
Dongpirang, on the hill behind Tongyeong’s Jungang Market, is a lane of murals overlooking Gangguan Harbor. People live here, so visitors should walk quietly.
Behind Jungang Market the walk begins to climb. Painted walls line the steps, and the rooftops open toward Gangguan Harbor. Beyond the murals, the lanes show how closely Tongyeong’s homes and waterfront fit together.
The name combines the word for east with a local word for a slope. In October 2007, Tongyeong Agenda 21 invited participants from across the country to paint the walls of a neighborhood then threatened with demolition, and it began to draw attention. The city presents the change as regeneration through public art.
Tongyeong’s mural festival repaints the neighborhood every two years, so a mural seen in older travel photos may be gone. All photographs with this article date from 2014 and do not show current murals or facilities.
Keep doorways clear, lower your voice and leave private interiors out of photographs. A simple route runs up through the lanes, pauses over the harbor and returns toward the market.
Only Here
- A harbor below the rooftops: the slope opens changing views over Gangguan. - Walls that change: the murals are an evolving neighborhood art project, not a fixed exhibit. - A shared street: visitors and residents use the same lanes, so leave room for everyday life.
Best Time
The official tourism listing says the area is open year-round, 24 hours. Because it is residential, daylight visits are recommended. Wet slopes and steps can be slippery; avoid late-night group visits.
How Long
Allow 1–2 hours for an unhurried walk and the viewpoints, plus extra time for a market meal or café. This is an editorial estimate, not an official route duration.
Getting There
Use 6-18 Dongpirang 1-gil, Tongyeong-si, Gyeongsangnam-do as the map destination. From central Tongyeong, take local transport or a taxi toward Jungang Market and Dongpirang, then explore on foot. The official listing shows parking before the village entrance; current charges were not confirmed. Narrow slopes and stairs mean step-free access is not assured.
