Twenty ghost sculptures under white cloth
The show opened Aug. 21 with more than 150 works from about five decades, running from painting and sculpture to installation, printmaking, photography and video.
The eye-catchers are about 20 "ghost sculptures" draped in white and yellowed cloth, as he kept them in his studio, and about 30 "throwing sculptures" made by tossing raw clay and letting gravity and collision decide the shape.
The 1973 'Disappearance' you can sit in
At his first solo show in 1973 at Myeongdong Gallery, he set out tavern tables, chairs and cups and served visitors makgeolli. Here, wooden platforms let visitors sit and talk instead.
At the entrance, his painting "Cheongmyeong" is recreated in LED at its original size and reflected in a mirror opposite. The artist sums up his theme as "how do we meet the unexpected?"
