Why NOW picked itA good indoor stop for a rainy day on Jeju. Adults pay 2,000 won and it closes at 6 pm, so put it early in the afternoon.
The 5th Jeju Biennale is on at the Jeju Museum of Art until Nov. 15. With adult tickets at 2,000 won, it is an easy hour or two to slot into a rainy day on Jeju.
The word "Iyahong" is the key
This year's title is "Heokkkok Modakchikkok Iyahong: The Art of Transformation". "Iyahong" is a refrain from Jeju folk songs, and the biennale uses it as shorthand for things that flow, mix and are born again.
The show follows how Jeju's own culture blended with civilisations from the north and changed shape over time.
Exile, stone and myth
According to the Ministry of Culture listing, the exhibition treats Jeju as a layered place and builds on exile, stone culture and myth. On an island of black basalt walls, the stone theme is easy to connect with what you see outside.
The listing adds that programmes may change depending on the organisers and performers.
Closes at 6 pm, and what it costs
Hours are 10:00 to 18:00. The ministry lists adults at 2,000 won, youth 1,000 won and children 500 won, with seniors and infants free.
Closed days are not stated, so call 064-710-4300 before you go. Some sites show 8,000 won, which matches the 2024 edition and looks out of date.
